Goodbye corporate and the search for hungry fools

1 min

In early September, I traveled to Zurich to speak at Frontend Conference and loved every minute of it. It was the best thing I did all year, not because I was on a stage but because I met so many brilliant people excited about technology and the possibilities. Terms like HTML5, CSS3, apps, web vs. native, hardware accelerated animations flew back and forth. But alas they were soon replaced by other terms like ROI (return on investment), CPC (cost per click) and conversion as soon as I got back to the office Monday morning. What a change! Well now I am happy to say: I’ve quit.

I’m excited at the possibilities, so many projects I’ve never finished and want to build; so many books, articles and magazines I’ve bought or downloaded but never read; so many iTunes University lectures on programming I want to consume. I’m also scared shitless at not having a new job lined up. But then again, do I want one? Maybe it’s a coincidence that Steve Jobs passed away recently. I keep thinking: Stay hungry, stay foolish. And what is the last hungry and foolish thing I’ve done? I had to rack my brain a bit to remember that in 2007 I gave up a salaried job offer with Bank of New York, Mellon Financial in Boston to come to Munich, Germany to teach English for 700 EUR a month or 32 EUR under the poverty line at the time. And it was one of the best decisions of my life. Four years later, I’m still here in Munich and have no plans to leave.

I’m excited!

I’m scared. Most Germans would find a new job first and then quit. But I know me. I wouldn’t ever leave because I really love many of the colleagues and teams I work with, in Munich as well as in London, Stockholm and Provo.

I know I have been quiet lately in terms of producing projects and designs. But I am winding down my projects and after a Christmas holiday in Berlin, I’ll be back, refreshed and ready to go!
