New Routines

1 min

It’s 7:49am and I am already pretty awake and sitting in front of the computer - and writing! (Ok, I finished checking twitter and RSS feeds). Normally I am still in bed, struggling to get up. So why the change?

Over the past several weeks I have been struggling with many thoughts about what I want to do next and how I want to grow as a web professional. I currently work a large global internet company, with some long fancy designer title, which doesn’t begin to reflect what I do. Since my old boss, our marketing director resigned two months ago, I have been holding down the fort in all things PR, marketing and product. And as our new marketing director settles in, I realize I don’t enjoy management as much as I do creating something, building something.

So design or development? I would love to pursue more UI design, esp. for mobile using HTML5 and CSS3. I have done that with a side project, but I need to apply it in more places. Unfortunately marketing - where I currently work is not a great fit. I would also love to do more development because at this point, it is more challenging for me. I have to learn new design patterns and figure out how more technologies fit together. The hours spent banging my head against the table while redoing my portfolio site are probably a distant memory right now. But coming out of that frustration phase is just wonderful.

Pieces fitting together? Is it then UX? No, I like backend too. HTML5, CSS3, UI design, iOS app design and development, so much to choose from!

Oops, now it’s after 8am. Time to jump into the shower, stop at the post office and go to work. Oh dear, I think I am turning into an adult.  Help…
